Christ My Song - 1442
'Tis sweet to know the sacred name
(Thomas Kelly/Johannes Thomas Rüegg)
'Tis sweet to know the sacred name.
"The name of the Lord is a strong tower." (Proverbs 18,10)
1. 'Tis sweet to know the sacred name
of him who bore the cross for us,
who suffered pain, and grief, and shame,
in love to man he suffered thus.
2. 'Tis sweet to know the sacred name,
of him whom truth declares to be,
today as yesterday, "the same",
"the same" throughout eternity.
3. How wonderful is he! how great!
who neither change nor weakness knows;
his people have a sure retreat,
he keeps them safe from all their foes.
4. They hide themselves behind his pow'r,
and thence look round upon their foes;
they fail not in the trying hour,
for God is with them to the close.
5. And when the final day is come,
when heav'n and earth have passed away,
the Lord will take his people home,
and oh! what joy is theirs that day.
Thomas Kelly, Hymns on various passages of Scripture, ca. 1853, Hymn 714.
