Christ My Song - 1471
The badge the Christian wears on earth - The Christian's cross (Carl Johann Philipp Spitta/Richard Massie/
Johannes Thomas Rüegg)
The Christian's cross.
2. He wears it humbly, not for show,
but as a cure for sin;
not shining on his breast, ah no!
he wears his cross within.
3. And tho' it tries and grieves him too,
he is no less content,
he knows both what 'tis meant to do,
and by whom it is sent.
4. He wears it for a brief space here,
but as a pledge in hand
of the bright crown, which he shall wear
in his dear Fatherland.
Richard Massie, Lyra Domestica I, 1863, 110.
